Homemade Cinnamon Rolls Recipe Details
This easy homemade bread dough starts by activating yeast in water.
I love to whip up this dough in my kitchen aid stand mixer, but it can be done by hand too.
Make sure your water is lukewarm (just slightly warm) in temperature. This gives the yeast time to wake up and activate, which will result in soft fluffy rolls.
After your yeast and sugar get slightly foamy, you want to whisk in your eggs, oil, and salt.
As soon as that is well combined, slowly mix in the flour!
I use anywhere from 6- 6 1/2 cups.
The dough hook on my mixer set on a low. I slowly add 1 cup of flour at a time until the dough starts to come together and form a ball.
Once the dough ball has formed, let the dough hook continue kneading (or hand knead) for 5 minutes or so.
The dough should feel slightly elastic to the touch when finished.
Lightly oil or grease the mixing bowl and return the dough to rise in a warm place.
I usually cover the dough bowl with a clean towel.
After the dough has risen to twice it’s size, it’s time punch it down and roll it out.
Lightly flour a surface and use a rolling pin to shape your dough into a somewhat rectangular shape.
I roll this dough fairly thin, maybe 1/8 inch or so. It will expand significantly while baking!
Now it’s time to slather on the good stuff.
Two stick of softened sweet cream butter, followed by brown sugar and ground cinnamon.
To be completely honest I never measure these amounts.
For this recipe I completely pulled the amounts out of thin air! 😉 haha
If you sprinkle liberally you’ll be in great shape.
After the dough is rolled into log form, I like to push in the ends and reshape the roll into as much of a symmetrical object as I can.
I then slice this log into disks (that are plenty thick) and place them onto a greased baking sheet.
Technically these can go right into a preheated 350 degree oven.
But they are even better if you give them another 15 minutes or so to rise a little bit again.
This will make them extra light and fluffy.
Bake these beauties for 20-30 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the centers are baked through.
(I put a 10 minute range on this because your baking time can depend upon elevation).
I let them cool slightly in the pan then start cutting them out and slathering them with a generous amount of icing just before serving them!
If you’ve never thrown together a quick frosting, you need to.
It’s as simple as powdered sugar, melted butter, vanilla and a splash of milk to reach the right consistency.
Free style with this one, it’s ok! 😉
Yum!
