Apple Crisp Recipe Run Down
Any great apple crisp recipe begins with tart crisp apples!
Apples are in season in the fall, which makes this recipe especially popular as a fall dessert.
You can pick any apple variety that you and your family like.
I have found that tart firm apples provide the most tang and flavor for this recipe.
Look for apple varieties like: Pink Lady, McIntosh, Granny Smith, or Breaburn
A quick rinse, and it’s time to peel and prep your apples.
Of course no one wants seeds and cores so be sure to cut those out as you are slicing your apples.
I prefer rustic wedges that hold their shape during the baking process.
Next up, everyone piles in the dish.
Delicious fresh ingredients don’t require a whole lot of work, simply add a little moisture for cooking (water/vanilla/lemon) mixture.
Sprinkle granulated sugar and cinnamon on top and you’re nearly there.
Apple Crisp Recipe Oat Crumb Topping
The crumb topping on an apple crisp as an absolutely necessary step!
You can’t replace the sweet buttery crunch on top of the soft warm apple filling.
This crumb topping comes together quickly by mashing butter, flour, sugar and oats together with the back of a fork.
When the butter is well incorporated and your topping resembles a cornmeal like texture it’s ready to pile on top of the fresh apples.
I gently sprinkle this by hand working to achieve semi even coverage over the entire dish.
This crust topping will act as a lid to seal in moisture to the dish and allow the apples to tenderize in the sauce during bake time.
It’s ready to go into the oven!
Place into a preheated 350 degree oven for 45-50.
The top should be golden brown and the apples fork tender when finished.
If you’re baking dish is filled pretty full, it’s a good idea to place the dish onto a baking sheet to prevent spillage in the oven.
This cinnamon sugar apples have a tendency to bubble up the sides of the dish as they are baking.
This apple crisp is best served warm with a scoop of fresh vanilla ice cream.
Cinnamon whipped cream is delicious too!
