A Quick Keto Overview
The ketogenic diet is pretty awesome because it produces results so quickly.
It’s no wonder SO many people are turning it into a lifestyle, and seeing rapid weight loss among other surprising benefits. If you’re not familiar, the ketogenic diet is a low-carb, moderate protein, high fat diet.
It turns your body from a sugar burner to fat burner.
Our culture has gone crazy with carbohydrates. Your body produces the hormone insulin to carry all of that glucose throughout your body to burn as energy. The problem? Insulin prevents your bodies fat stores from being released.
If you want to lose weight, you need to know that it’s not fat that is the enemy…it’s sugar!
Depressing isn’t it? Especially for a girl who love sugar cookies. haha
Don’t stay depressed for long. When you get your body into a state of ketosis…you’ll learn when it’s ok to indulge a little.
What in the heck is Ketosis?
Before grocery stores and globalized produce, our ancestors lived mostly off local vegetables and meat. (That’s why this diet plan is also referred to as the caveman diet) Back in those days, their bodies knew how to convert sugarless foods (proteins & fats) into energy due to the hormone ketonin.
As our food trends have shifted to a heavy carbohydrate diets, our bodies have slowed or stopped producing ketonin all together. Instead of producing ketonin, we produce insulin, and a whole lot of it.
That’s why we crave sugary and starch foods when we’re tired and hungry. That’s why we look for a candy bar or pop for a mid afternoon pick me up. It’s a vicious cycle of spikes and crashes that lead to sugary food cravings and unhealthy eating practices.
The Ketogenic diet was originally created to help fight epilepsy.
While it did help with that, it was later discovered that the diet had many other health benefits as well. Those were less inflammation, lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels to name a few.
Sorry for the sciences lesson, I know you’re here for the recipes. I was just feeling compelled to divulge a little for the keto newcomers. 🙂
